Assistant Financial Controller

Humber Recruitment are resourcing an Assistant Financial Controller for our client based in Grimsby on a full-time basis.

About the Role

We are looking for a Assistant Financial Controller to join our client’s Finance team and play a key role in supporting both the day-to-day finance function and the financial performance of projects.

This is a hands-on and varied role, combining core management accounting and period-end responsibilities with project accounting, forecasting, financial analysis and business partnering.

You will work closely with the Financial Controller and Project Managers to ensure financial information is accurate, timely and meaningful, while providing insight into project performance, costs, margins and cash flow.

As the client continues to grow, this role will also have an important part to play in developing financial processes, strengthening controls and improving the way we use financial information across the business.

What You’ll Be Responsible For

Financial Accounting & Period End

• Take ownership of key areas of the period-end close process, including accruals, prepayments and journals.

• Complete balance sheet reconciliations, investigating and resolving reconciling items promptly.
• Maintain the fixed asset register and assist with fixed asset accounting.
• Process cash book entries and complete bank reconciliations.
• Prepare period-end debtor reports and support effective credit control.
• Prepare VAT returns and associated supporting reports.
• Prepare and process period BACS payment runs.
• Support internal and external audits by preparing information and responding to audit requests.

Sales Ledger & Payroll

• Support the preparation of monthly sales/Purchase invoices and ensure billing is aligned with project and contractual requirements.
• Allocate customer receipts and carry out effective credit control.
• Investigate and resolve customer queries relating to invoices and payments.
• Complete weekly and period payroll checks to ensure payroll information is accurate, complete and correctly allocated.
• Period Reconciliation and analysis of payroll costs where required.

Project Accounting & Cost Control

• Take responsibility for monitoring the financial performance of allocated projects, including project-related accruals and prepayments, ensuring costs are recognised in the correct period.
• Prepare project financial reports and provide clear commentary on performance.
• Support Project Managers in understanding project costs, margins and financial risks.
• Present financial information in a way that is understandable and useful to non-finance colleagues.

Process Improvement

• Identify opportunities to improve finance processes, controls and reporting.
• Develop more efficient approaches to project cost allocation and financial reporting.
• Use Excel and available finance systems to improve the accuracy and efficiency of reporting.
• Support the introduction of automation and business intelligence tools where appropriate.
• Take ownership of agreed improvements from identification through to implementation.

What We’re Looking For

We are looking for someone who is technically capable, commercially minded and enjoys getting into the detail while also understanding the bigger picture.

Essential

• AAT qualified or part-qualified ACCA/CIMA, or equivalent relevant experience.
• Previous experience in a finance or management accounting role.
• Good understanding of period-end accounting, accruals, prepayments and balance sheet reconciliations.
• Strong Excel skills, including XLOOKUP/VLOOKUPs, PivotTables and data analysis.
• Previous payroll experience.
• Experience using Exact or another ERP/accounting system.
• Strong attention to detail and a structured approach to financial control.
• Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate issues, identify root causes and implement practical solutions.
• Experience of improving and developing financial processes and controls.
• Excellent communication skills, with the confidence to work with both finance and operational teams.

Desirable

• Experience within a project-based, engineering, construction, industrial services or contracting environment.
• Experience of project accounting and project cost control.
• Experience with budgeting and forecasting.
• Experience preparing project management accounts or financial performance reports.
