About the Role

The Welding & Fabrication Quality Manager will provide quality support across the company’s engineering and fabrication activities, with responsibility for ensuring projects and workshop activities meet customer, contractual and relevant industry requirements.

The role is hands-on and will cover quality planning, welding, inspection, NDT, documentation, audits and non-conformance. The Welding & Fabrication Quality Manager will work closely with Production, Engineering and Project Management to identify and resolve quality issues and make sure the right inspection and quality controls are in place.

The role will also coordinate quality resources when required and support the Assurance Manager in developing the company’s quality systems and processes.

Key Responsibilities

Welding, fabrication and inspection

  • Provide hands-on quality and inspection support across workshop and project activities.
  • Develop and review Quality Plans, Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) and inspection requirements.
  • Review engineering drawings, specifications and customer requirements to establish appropriate quality controls.
  • Maintain Welding Procedure Specifications (WPSs), Procedure Qualification Records (PQRs) and welder qualification records.
  • Ensure suitably qualified welders and approved welding procedures are in place.
  • Coordinate non-destructive testing (NDT), review reports and radiographs, and arrange external inspection services.
  • Carry out coating inspections where required.
  • Prepare and review welding, inspection and test documentation.

Quality assurance and documentation

  • Compile and maintain manufacturing quality packs, final quality dossiers and Manufacturing Record Books (MRBs).
  • Ensure material certificates, weld records, NDT reports and inspection documentation are complete and traceable.
  • Maintain material and component traceability throughout manufacture.
  • Ensure quality documentation is completed progressively, and outstanding items are closed out before project handover.
  • Ensure fabrication and inspection activities meet customer, contractual and applicable industry requirements.

Non-conformance and continuous improvement

  • Raise, investigate and manage non-conformance reports (NCRs).
  • Lead root cause investigations and agree appropriate corrective and preventive actions.
  • Monitor actions through to completion and identify recurring quality issues.
  • Work with Production, Engineering and Project teams to prevent repeat problems and improve right-first-time performance.

Standards, audits and compliance

  • Conduct internal and supplier audits and support customer and certification audits.
  • Maintain compliance with ISO 9001, EN 1090, BS EN ISO 3834 and relevant customer requirements, as applicable to the business.
  • Support the Assurance Manager in maintaining and developing the Quality Management System and associated certifications.

Planning and team coordination

  • Coordinate quality and inspection resources to support production and project programmes.
  • Identify resource requirements and provide technical guidance to Quality Engineers, Welding Inspectors and other quality personnel.
  • Coordinate external inspection and NDT providers and develop in-house inspection capability where appropriate.
  • Monitor quality-related costs and ensure resources are used effectively.
  • Support the training and development of quality personnel as the function grows.

You will also be expected to follow company SHE procedures, promote safe working practices and work collaboratively with workshop, production and project teams.

What We’re Looking For

We are particularly interested in candidates with practical quality experience in welding, fabrication or heavy engineering, rather than quality management experience alone.

You should have:

  • Proven experience in a quality or inspection role within fabrication, welding, engineering or a similar industrial manufacturing environment.
  • Strong knowledge of fabrication quality requirements, welding compliance and inspection processes.
  • Practical experience with WPSs, PQRs and welder qualifications.
  • Experience coordinating or reviewing NDT and other inspection activities.
  • Experience preparing Quality Plans, ITPs, manufacturing record packs and final quality dossiers.
  • A sound understanding of material traceability, weld records and manufacturing documentation.
  • Experience managing NCRs, root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Good working knowledge of ISO 9001; experience with EN 1090 and BS EN ISO 3834 is desirable.
  • The ability to interpret engineering drawings and customer specifications.
  • A practical, proactive approach and the confidence to challenge quality issues on the workshop floor.

Relevant qualifications such as CSWIP, IWI, PCN, NDT, coating inspection or ISO 9001 auditing would be advantageous.

The Ideal Candidate

You are a technically credible quality professional who understands how fabricated products are manufactured, inspected and certified. You are comfortable working directly with welders, inspectors, supervisors and project teams, and can balance compliance and documentation with the practical demands of production.

You take ownership, communicate clearly and can identify problems early, resolve issues constructively and maintain high standards through to final delivery.

If you have a background in welding and fabrication quality and are looking for a role where your technical expertise can make a tangible difference, we would like to hear from you.
