This role combines mechanical, electrical, and electronic engineering responsibilities, providing fleet-wide technical support, proactive maintenance, fault diagnosis, and long-term asset management. The Fleet Engineer will also act as the company’s technical representative at shipbuilders’ yards during new-build and refit projects, ensuring vessels are delivered on time, on budget, and in line with the client’s technical and commercial interests.

The role requires a flexible, hands-on approach, including travel, on-call support, attendance at dockings, and occasional sailing with vessels to diagnose and resolve defects.

The role will require participation in an on-call rota (currently 2 weeks in 4) to provide out-of-hours technical support. Appropriate compensation will be provided in line with company policy.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain and repair gearbox systems, including ZF and Servogear units.
  • Perform fault-finding, diagnostics, and repairs across mechanical, electrical, electronic, hydraulic, and heating systems.
  • Conduct performance testing, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis to prevent recurring defects.

Electrical & Electronic Systems

  • Provide day-to-day support for marine electrical and electronic systems.
  • Manage planned maintenance schedules for electrical systems, including power generation, distribution, emergency/backup power, switchboards, and fire detection systems.
  • Conduct electrical insulation resistance surveys, earth fault investigations, and condition monitoring.

Planned Maintenance & Asset Management

  • Evaluate, manage, and improve planned maintenance systems (PMS) for all fleet engineering disciplines.
  • Conduct proactive condition checks across the fleet, including time spent on board individual vessels.
  • Identify recurring fault trends across mechanical and electrical systems and implement preventative measures.
  • Plan major repairs, upgrades, and system replacements.
  • Develop long-term maintenance strategies, lifecycle plans, and cost forecasts for fleet equipment.

 New Builds, Dockings & Compliance

  • Represent the client at shipbuilders’ yards during new-build, refit, and warranty periods.
  • Provide input into annual docking plans and attend dockings when on rota.
  • Ensure compliance with Class, Flag, OS-HSC Code, and company QHSE requirements.
  • Demonstrate and promote a strong safety culture across all vessel and shore-based activities.

Operational Support & Reporting

  • Collaborate closely with vessel crews to troubleshoot issues and provide coaching and guidance on maintenance and inspections.
  • Travel and work across multiple UK and European ports to support fleet operations.
  • Adopt a flexible working approach aligned with operational demands, including breakdowns and emergency repairs.
  • Provide on-call technical support to diagnose and, where possible, resolve issues as they arise.
  • Send Daily Progress Reports (DPRs) and accurately report all activities to the office.

Stores, Procurement & Supplier Management

  • Monitor warehouse stock levels and liaise with the Procurement team to ensure availability of spares and consumables.
  • Purchase and collect spares and consumables as required to support fleet operations.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with local and international suppliers.

Skills and Experience Requirements

  • Recognised engineering qualification such as NVQ Level 3, HNC/HND, diploma or degree in Mechanical, Marine, Electrical, or Systems Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Demonstrable experience in a marine or fleet engineering role, preferably including multi-disciplinary systems.
  • Strong fault-finding, diagnostic, and problem-solving skills across mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Ability to read technical drawings, schematics, and maintenance documentation.
  • Effective communicator with the ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse teams.
  • Flexibility for travel, on-call support, and variable work locations.
  • Full, valid driving licence and willingness to travel overseas for vessel operational support.

Desirable Attributes

  • Experience with industry-specific vessel operations such as CTVs or similar high-speed crafts.
